Welp, we tried

Sad as I am to say it, the site just isn’t getting the traffic we anticipated, or hoped it would based on what happened in the past. Thank you all who are left for sticking with us for this long, and I hope we will all stay in touch through the steam group.

The site will remain up until the next billing period, that is 8/15. At that point, I will downgrade the hosting (which means the database will have to go). The forums may remain up indefinitely, depending on whether or not I renew the domains come 2014.

Once again, I’m sad to see this go as mAI has been a big part of my life for years now, and leaving it just feels wrong. But this time, it’s our own decision, and not the forced exile we experienced from mAL, so we have no one to blame but ourselves.

I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors, and hope your cakes are not falsehoods. It’s been fun.

  1. This was one of the best communities I’ve ever participated. It’s so sad seeing that this have to end… But I DO need to say though that I really enjoyed it while I was participating. If more people could see this site it would surely be more active, since this is so funny and dynamic. I’ll REALLY miss this site, specially it’s users…
    :approve:

  2. It wasn’t boring, anyway. Until the end. Sad to the site go, especially after working so hard to bring it back. Still, there will be forums. So don’t just take this as an abandon ship. If you release a map, you can still make a thread. The database may be dying but we can keep the forum alive.

But if the forum can stay up, can we not simply use other hosting sites? ModDB would be a good one, but we could also use the steam workshop.

    Is that possible?

I agree. Even if there isn’t a download database we can still post links to our maps and such.

but no one is posting maps

    you see

Both databases have been backed up. After the shut down of the database, I’ll try pulling some strings with P0p to get a "database" thread where you can download stuff. P0p is probably reading this. Hey.

If there is anywhere to put them as a median, I would be willing to upload each and every one individually to ModDB. Perhaps under a MyApertureInnovations group.

I did it for Minecraft for three years, I can do it for MaL/MaI :U

  7. Colossal wrote:Forum will stay up. Hopefully P0p will renew the domain at the end of the year and it will stay up longer.

I probably will because I still use the site for some little side things and I don’t really want anyone snatching it up in the meanwhile. mAI expires mid-2014, mAL doesn’t expire until sometime after that as I recall.

  8. msleeper wrote:I’m willing to bail you out. Contact me on Steam if you’re interested.

While I’m sure I could make the case of that being harmful to the site, I don’t think I’ll even bother this time.

The site is slow. mAi is dying and portal/2 isn’t popular as a mapping platform anymore. No amount of bailing out would change this. Portal is dying and there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

I’d guess TWP is probably suffering the same fate. I’ve seen this happen before, with Zoo Admin. It’s a pity really.

  9. Actually, TwP is doing pretty well. Lots of people are posting maps, albeit mostly PTI ones, and the Hammer and Modding forum is still alive (ba-dum KSH).

I think mAI could be brought back if it had a bit more publicity.

  10. vanSulli wrote:I feel obliged to point out that msleeper was not to anyone’s knowledge presenting a merger or anything similar.

this may be true, but lets be honest, TWP and mAi would be twisted up in some way.

when all is said and done, MSleeper is the owner of another forum in a small niche of the community, and wants to take full control of it (wanting to buy mAl a while back). Naturally, they’d want to integrate them somehow, and she won’t sacrifice any part of their community now, would they?

it’s simple logic that this community would get the short end of the stick, which was my point :v

  11. UPDATE:

Msleeper has graciously offered to host the entire site (database, forums, wiki and all) on her server cluster. What does that mean? Well, pretty much nothing, from your end. The site might go down for a little bit while we get everything transferred over. From our end, that means 1) we no longer pay for hosting, which is a good thing, and 2) msleeper owns the mAI and mAL domains (once we transfer them). Some of you may object to this, but it’s certainly not a bad thing because it doesn’t make sense to have to negotiate everything domain-related whenever we want to get anything done. And msleeper has assured me she doesn’t have the time to manage two different sites anyway, so we retain full control, essentially.

  12. I am pleased with this development.

AS long as we retain some sort of control on our end, I have zero problems with this. Perhaps together we can revive interest in the Portal community.

  13. Okay it’s been moved over, everything should be working. Any viewers who are having further problem are likely DNS cache related. You can either restart your browser, restart your computer, or in the worst possible case, wait 24 hours for your local ISP’s cache to clear.

  14. to post what was lost:

Hey, lets be fair here, your community doesn’t exactly welcome newcomers to the mapping scene.
Granted, my project was far too large, and I was literally just entering mapping, but I was essentially chased out of there, with the owner at the forefront, while being told to stop mapping forever. Can you really blame me for not trusting you, even now?

I am naturally still wary of any deal made with MSleeper, but if the terms are correct, I will certainly be eating some humble pie. Gladly so, as it would make her seem less vicious than the MSleeper I encountered all that while ago. A lot more generous too.

In short: If the terms are right, you are less of a ass than I thought you were, and I mean that in the kindest way possible. :v

God using that smiley/actually kind words to MSleeper is so unnatural what is even happening

Yeah gee, maybe my response to you acting like a twat four years ago is not actually indicative of anything after all. Who would have guessed?

I was new to the mapping scene, and had seen multiplayer portal through other videos. I had ideas for a mod, mappers and texturers and a coder. I was confident I could do it, I had just underestimated the effort.
Also, my coder /did/ get portals working graphically, for the most part. It was the physics she was trying to code that was the main issue. Yet you all kept saying it was impossible, even though we have a steady trickle of progress on the portals back then. I apologise if I had personally gone after you, but from the looks of it, while my new-to-the-modding-scene mentality and overuse of the :3 smiley was badly unrealistic, it truly didn’t deserve the flaming it had got.
I concur, it was a long time, and ordinarily it would be childish to hold a grudge that long. However, bearing in mind this was the very start, it was pivotal to if I had continued mapping or not, which I decided to do so on this site, where the community were more patient.

Everyone has a start, and not everyone has a good start. Particularly one who does have a social handicap, however small it may be. But I shan’t hide behind that completely.

I digress, as I know these can get heated. But in my head, we were trying to make Portal so much greater than it already was, a goal that I’m sure both communities would be behind. And we were making real progress, before the inevitability of Real Life caught up with our team, as it usually does for most mod teams.

Also, I did not lie about that steamworks email. we legitimately did get a reply from steam about hosting the mod through them. I think the offer has expired by now though.

  15. Re-reading that thread reminded me of sbrown. Man, he was a funny motherducker back in the day. Man, good times.

But yeah, thanks msleeper for your help. Not really sure why you did, still appreciate it tho. :cake:

I was telling a friend of mine the situation, and his assessment of the situation is that I’ve owned Boardwalk and just got Park Place. But, more realistically, as I was telling p0rtalplayer on Steam, I really hate seeing content go away and all other things being equal I want to do what I can to preserve it. Workshop notwithstanding, the best Portal content is now under a single roof, and I think in the end that will benefit everyone.

Sven wrote:And the Steam link under our avatars is working again.

    Fantastic.

p0rtalplayer wrote:Actually I didn’t even change anything it just started working again

    yey

I’m betting that whatever service you use had your IP blocked or something like that. So now that the domain is on a new address, your stuff works again.

Just please try to not take the game metaphor too far.

  18. Fine, fine. I was originally just trying to say thanks, and saying I may have got MSleeper slightly wrong.
Or, at least, the best way I could possibly write it without it being a u-turn or kissass attempt :v

Colossal wrote:I hope he never comes back.

Me too. He was a horrible admin. When I locked his thread because he kept spamming his doubts with like, three new threads on the viability of Off Topic, even though it was the most active forum on the board, then and now, he went crazy and asked 4chan to hack me, while also leaving a link to mAL there, opening us to danger. Was crazy :v

Pretty ok guy, but didn’t do admining well.
